Image Maps

Guideline

Server-side image maps may not be used. Client-side image-maps must be used instead.

Intent

The intent of this regulation is to ensure that server-side image maps are not used, since they cannot be made keyboard accessible and are incompatible with assistive technologies. Any server-side image maps must therefore be replaced by client-side ones.

Finding Applicable Components

Analyze the page with the DeQue Attest extension to verify if any server-side image maps are present.

Inspecting and Using Components

Section 508/WCAG 2.0 Failure Conditions

Fails Conformance requirement #4: Only accessibility ways.

Reporting Test Results

Any failure in Section 508 Failure Conditions results in: Fails Baseline Requirement #26.

There are no server-side image maps then: Passes Baseline Requirement #26.

For sharing test results between Agencies, the results of Section 508 Conditions and Reporting Test Results must be reported.
