Alternate Pages
Guideline
When the primary page or site cannot be made accessible, an alternative page or site must contain equivalent and up-to-date content.
Intent
The intent of this regulation is to ensure that all of the information and all of the functionality that is on the pages inside of the scope of conformance is available on conforming Web pages.
A conforming alternate version is one that:
- conforms at the designated level, and
- provides all of the same information and functionality in the same human language, and
- is as up to date as the non-conforming content, and
- for which at least one of the following is true:
- the conforming version can be reached from the non-conforming page via an accessibility-supported mechanism, or
- the non-conforming version can only be reached from the conforming version, or
- the non-conforming version can only be reached from a conforming page that also provides a mechanism to reach the conforming version.
Finding Applicable Components
Determine whether there are any alternate pages or sites by examining the content (pay particular attention to content containing maps, directions, complex charts etc.).
Inspecting and Using Components
- Compare the content of the primary page/site and the Alternate page/site, noting any information differences and/or out-of-date material.
Section 508/WCAG 2.0 Failure Conditions
- An Alternate page/site is provided, but the information is not equivalent to and up to date with the primary page/site.
- Fails 1194.22(k): Text only or Alternative versions.
- Fails Conformance requirement #1: Conforming alternate version.
Reporting Test Results
Any failure in Section 508 Failure Conditions results in: Fails Baseline Requirement #24.
An alternate page or site contains equivalent, up-to-date information compared with the primary page or site then: Passes Baseline Requirement #24.
