Types of Investigations

The Agency must determine the type of investigation required for the position. Listed below are the five basic types of background investigations.

• Minimum Background Investigation (MBI)
• Limited Background Investigation (LBI)
• Background Investigation (BI)
• Special Background Investigation (SBI)
• National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI)

These investigations are conducted by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). OPM is responsible for conducting all competitive service investigations. SETS Security Entry and Tracking System allows tracking of these types of investigations as well as other types of investigations conducted by other Agencies.
